The non-profit association SOLAAL (Solidarity of Food Producers and the Food Industry) was founded by Jean-François Lemétayer to provide the missing link between stakeholders in the food sector on the one hand, and organisations responsible for delivering food aid on the other. The Carrefour Foundation knows all too well about the issues surrounding wasted food and food aid. As one of the benefactors of SOLAAL, the Foundation has supported the project every step of the way to where it is today.

The facts are clear: the number of people in France living below the poverty threshold is in constant progression. Food aid, and that means food donations, are therefore indispensable. It has become a matter of urgency to secure the supply for this sector and to make sure that beneficiaries have a balanced and quality diet.

To meet this challenge SOLAAL has drawn up a plan centred around four main lines of action:

  • Strengthening the commitment of stakeholders in the sector by informing them and raising awareness about food

  • Facilitating the organisation of food donations by bringing upstream and downstream players in the sector together

  • Combating food waste by recuperating products rejected by the classic supply circuits, yet which are nevertheless fit for consumption;

  • Helping beneficiaries receive a balanced diet by giving them access to fresh, high quality produce.

SOLAAL's approach starts to produce tangible results that echo the Foundation’s own focuses of action, including the food industry, food collections and donations, as well as nutrition programmes : 1 200 tons of food products have been donated by the end of December. 92% of them were fresh food.

The Carrefour Foundation has contributed to the development of SOLAAL's activities for the third time in 2015 and has renewed its help in 2016. It also acts as a facilitator by involving Carrefour's collaborators and warehouses in the logistics. In light of the encouraging results of the activities carried out by SOLAAL since 2013 (distribution of 5,800 tons of products, creation of the first national day of agricultural donations), the Foundation will continue to support SOLAAL by financing up to 20% of the total budget of the project.

In 2017, the Carrefour Foundation will continue funding SOLAAL for a pilot project in two french regions, and the creation of a smartphone application in order to facilitate the donation of farmers.

In 2018, the Foundation is supporting the creation of a meat donation chain in Normandy. From donations from voluntary breeders of the Normandy Race Quality Network (FQRN), chopped steaks will be provided to food aid associations, which often lack protein products. On the other hand, SOLAAL is pursuing the objective of developing in the PACA and New Aquitaine regions.

TESTIMONY
SOLAAL ‘s approach is both totally innovative and full of hope. In the long run it should produce tangible results that echo the Foundation’s own focuses of action, including the food industry, food collections and donations, as well as nutrition programmes.
