The "Wings" program offers tangible help to 650 000 disadvantaged children, enabling them to go to school in the best conditions, to take meals at the school canteen, have medical check-ups and buy essential school materials (e.g. notebooks, pencils and school bags). Once their children are being taken care of, families are better able to overcome the immediate economic hardships they face, while the children can learn essential life skills. The education focuses on the child’s physical and psychological development as well as his or her academic development.
Since 2007, the 75 Carrefour hypermarkets, working with Caritas, have coordinated 120 local initiatives with 79 primary schools. In 2008, 750 more children were able to benefit from the "Wings" program. In 2009, 80 schools were sponsored by the 80 Carrefour stores in Poland, providing tangible support (donations of school materials, etc.) as well as human support (teaching assistance and transport, etc.).
