Food Banks in France and abroad

The Carrefour Foundation supports Food Bank networks across the world, which enable those living in poverty to have a healthy and varied diet.

Since 1994, Carrefour has been a partner of Food Banks, first in France then in other countries.

Carrefour organises collections of products taken off the shelves, either because of small labelling errors, slight packaging defects, or because they are nearing their ‘sell-by’ or 'eat-by' date. As they are stacking the shelves, Carrefour staff select and remove products that are still safe to eat, but are nearing their sell-by date. These products are then sorted and collected by the partner charity associations. Carrefour store managers then organise the entire logistics chain from warehouse to the food banks' own facilities. In 2016, more than 142 million meals have been donated worldwide by Carrefour to charity food aid organizations.

In addition, the Carrefour Foundation mobilizes every year hundreds of employees of the Group for the annual in-store food collections. By involving clients and informing them of the specific needs of the poorest, nearly 9 million meals have been offered to the food banks in France in 2016 mobilised in over 3 000 stores.

 

In addition to these donations and collections of food products, the Carrefour Foundation is helping food banks to improve their logistics capabilities. This support also involves the purchase of refrigerated vehicles to maintain the cold chain and keep products fresh during transportation. The Foundation also funds refrigeration facilities in the food banks to store the goods.

In 2017, the Foundation gave a total of €131 300 to the FFBA for the purchase of 6 refrigerated vehicles, 2 cold rooms and the creation of a fruit and vegetables transformation workshop. Morevoer, a grant of €22 000 was attributed to FEBA to co-finance a cycle of professional training for the European food bank managers. 

In 2018, the Carrefour Foundation financed in France nine refrigerated trucks and two cold-storage rooms for 11 regional offices.

In Argentina, the Carrefour Foundation supported the Federation to buy equipment such as refrigerated trucks or computers in order to manage closely the donations. A donation was used to co-finance 5 refrigerated trucks in Spain for the FESBAL.

 

 

 

TESTIMONY
A whole chain of solidarity is being set up. These donations are a real lifeline for these people, some of whom are facing very great hardships. And with the refrigerated facilities donated by the Carrefour Foundation we can preserve the cold chain and provide beneficiaries with fresh products that are often lacking in their diet because they cost too much.
