FESBAL receives the Prince of Asturias Award for Peace

This has been an especially positive year for us, as the Spanish Federation of Food Banks (FESBAL), an organization we work with on a regular basis, has received the Prince of Asturias Award for Peace.

The Prince of Asturias Awards were created to distinguish achievements in technical and scientific research, the arts, social sciences and humanities by individuals, groups and institutions. They are the highest distinctions of their kind in Spain.

Since its inception in 2001, the Carrefour Solidarity Foundation (Spain) has established a firm working relationship with the Spanish Federation of Food Banks. Year after year, the Carrefour Solidarity Foundation (Spain) has reaffirmed its commitment to the work and endeavour of Spain’s 52 food banks, which give assistance to 1,300,000 people threatened by marginalization and social exclusion.

Every year, the Carrefour Solidarity Foundation organizes two National Food Collection Campaigns, one in May and one in November. During these campaigns, Food Bank tables are set up at the entrances to Carrefour hypermarkets, where volunteers collect food donations from shoppers. In every campaign, the Carrefour Solidarity Foundation pledges to donate the same quantity of food donated by shoppers, thus doubling the final tonnage delivered to FESBAL.

Local food banks then distribute the donations to the organizations they work with. Last year, the Carrefour Solidarity Foundation donated 1,257,444 kilograms of food to FESBAL.

As another facet of its cooperation agreement, the Carrefour Solidarity Foundation also donates to FESBAL products whose shelf life has expired but which are still suitable for consumption. In 2011, FESBAL received 1,317,726 kilograms of such products from the Carrefour Solidarity Foundation.

In total, therefore, the Carrefour Solidarity Foundation donated 2,575,170 kilograms of foods to the Spanish Federation of Food Banks in 2011.

In a third channel of cooperation, the Carrefour Solidarity Foundation (with the financial support of the Carrefour Foundation) operates a vehicle funding scheme which has helped FESBAL increase its food collection and distribution capacity. As part of the same scheme, FESBAL also receives equipment and machinery for the movement and management of products. Since 2008, FESBAL has received 21 vehicles, eight forklift trucks, two stackers and two electric pallet loaders.
